I wonder if I am alone in thinking that the degree to which atheism, agnosticism, paganism is represented on the TMB has increased during the past year or so. And, the number of challenges (some of which really are ill-disguised attacks) on the veracity of the Scriptures have also multiplied?
The watershed moment for me came today when Nitro posted a cover of Bart Erhman's bestseller on the TMB. Erhman happens to be a biblical scholar, and also a sceptic - one might say this is a dangerous mixture for the good of Christianity because unformed laypeople tend to overwhelmingly believe small handfuls of sceptical biblical scholars (especially when the arrive at sceptical conclusions) rather than the vast majority of highly trained, intelligent, orthodox ones.
A couple of years ago it was assumed that the vast majority of participants on the TMB were believers. Now that cadre seems to have dwindled to a few stalwarts. I seem to spend more time discussing the validity of the Scriptures, paganism, and refuting atheistic assertions - or responding to egregious heresies thought dead for centuries - than I do dialoguing with people who properly believe.
There is a person I hold very responsible for much of this disbelief, although unfortunately she is an extremely irresponsible individual and will never accept the results of her handiwork until Judgement. Nevertheless, it is a sad state of affairs - to paraphrase an old folk song: "where have all the Christians gone?"
